"The ego is not master in its own house."
– "The Ego and the Id", Freud
Freud developed the structural model of the mind, dividing it into three main components:
Unconscious: The realm of instincts and primitive drives such as sex and death.
Superego: The internalized moral authority that supervises, polices, and punishes our desires and impulses.
Ego: Our conscious self.
The piece Self symbolizes these three structures:
- In the position of the red traffic light, we see images representing the chaotic, primal drives of the unconscious.
- At the yellow light, images depict the process of moral judgment and supervision: the Superego evaluating whether or not our impulses should be allowed into consciousness and how.
- At the green light, images represent our conscious awareness.
By watching these three streams unfold simultaneously, the viewer gains a sense of the mind’s complexity—and of how this inner tension gives rise to the vast differences in human behaviour.
