Hypodermic Theory: "A communication model that defines how a message can spread within a passive receiver, without their awareness."
In recent decades, the excess pollution caused by all of us has been growing exponentially. Because it appeared in a subtle, almost imperceptible way, we’ve normalized it. This art piece demonstrates the degradation of our ecosystem.
The gum machine on the left represents the ecosystem decades ago: healthy. A screen plays a continuous loop of videos showing a pristine ocean floor.
The gum machine on the right recreates the same image, but in a different time, where children of the same age as those on the left think nothing of playing in the sea, surrounded by plastic. The children themselves are made of plastic, representing the microplastics we all passively ingest.
